The Kerem Tunnel, the first bicycle tunnel in Israel was opened as part of the Jerusalem Ring Path, a 42-kilometer cycle path that runs around Jerusalem, the capital city.
The tunnel runs along the Nahal Refaim-Emek Motza route. The tunnel's southern entrance is located in Refaim Park below Ein Laban. The northern entrance can be found in Nahal Ein Kerem about half an hour away from the Kerem junction.
On Thursday, Jerusalem and Heritage Minister Zeev Elkin, Mayor Michael, Avi Baleshnikov, Gihon chairman, and a slew of cyclists were present at a celebration to inaugurate the tunnel's 2.1-kilometer-long length.
Jerusalem was a desirable tourist destination due to its rich and fascinating historical. Around NIS 25 million were put into in the project, budgeted by Elkin's ministry, the Tourism Ministry, the Jerusalem Municipality as well as the Gihon Corporation and the Jerusalem Purification and Sewerage Works, with the work carried out by the Jerusalem Development Authority.
Elkin said that the Kerem Tunnel project is an important tool in realizing the vision to transform the idea of transport throughout Jerusalem. The Kerem Tunnel first was excavated in the late 90s to relocate the main sewer line of the Gihon Corporation towards Sorek. It is now being used as an infrastructure Tunnel which includes the fifth waterline to Jerusalem via the Mekorot water corporation.

The works currently underway include road construction, the installation of blowers and advanced security and electrical systems in order to ensure that the tunnel is secure for the public to pass through all year round.
The Kerem Tunnel provides access to exclusive recreation spots, including Ein Kerem neighbourhood, the biblical aquarium and zoo as well the historic natural springs Ein Haniyeh, Ein Laban, and Ein Haniyeh.
